本作は、上りエスカレーターにビニール傘を1本置いただけの映像作品である(2013年、映像・ステレオ)。
傘は段に運ばれて上昇していくが、その自重によって段の上を滑り落ちる。上昇しようとする機械の力と、下降しようとする重さの力とが拮抗するその狭間で、傘は昇りきることもなく、落ちきることもないまま、宙づりにされ続ける。画面に映るのはこの停滞そのものであり、聞こえてくるのはただ、傘とエスカレーターの段がこすれ合う、カタカタという乾いた音だけである。
上昇と下降のあいだで繰り返されるこの宙づりの状態は、ただ引き延ばされた保留の時間であり、可能性を可能性のままかろうじて保持している状態と言える。カタカタという音は、その保留がなお持続していることを告げる、唯一のしるしである。
This work is a video piece made simply by placing a single vinyl umbrella on an ascending escalator (2013; video, stereo).
The umbrella is carried upward on the step, but its own weight causes it to slide back down across the step's surface. Caught in the standoff between the mechanical force pushing it upward and the force of its own weight pulling it down, the umbrella remains suspended — never quite climbing to the top, never quite falling all the way down. What the screen shows is this stalemate itself; what can be heard is only the dry, clattering sound of the umbrella scraping against the escalator's steps.
This suspended state, repeating endlessly between ascent and descent, is nothing more than a prolonged, held-open span of time — a state that just barely holds possibility open, as possibility itself. The clattering sound is the sole sign that this state of abeyance still continues.
