This work is an installation measuring 1800mm wide × 1800mm high × 600mm deep (2009), made by disassembling used paper shopping bags into flat sheets, aligning the direction of the handles, and stacking them in layers. The front, where the drooping handles concentrate, and the back carry different expressions: the former reveals the manifestation of possessive desire, its reverse side the powerlessness that arrives after possession, once desire has been satisfied.

Paper shopping bags, endlessly produced and discarded in daily life, can also be seen — if we shift our perspective — as the most ubiquitous "bearers of text" in consumer society, covered in printed matter such as store names, logos, and catchphrases.

Through the repeated act of tsumu — piling up — the material is stacked to a scale of 1.8 meters square, more architectural than bodily; in the process, this originally disposable, lightweight material acquires the weight and presence of a solid mass.

This mass, built from the repetition of desire and its collapse, suggests the shadow of text — text used as decoration to drive consumption, and itself consumed in turn (an anxiety and revulsion toward material civilization, or global capitalism itself, or perhaps simply what that civilization has degenerated into).
